Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) has fined Taichung Bank NT$12 million for ineffective internal control systems and violations of banking regulations. The bank’s chairman, Wang Kuei-fong, allegedly diverted NT$1 billion in public funds, resulting in his arrest and bail set at NT$15 million. The FSC discovered that Taichung Bank’s insurance subsidiaries had close ties to specific credit customers and their related companies, leading to questionable trading decisions and unsatisfactory internal controls. Wang will be suspended for three months and may face additional fines. The issue was uncovered during a financial inspection in February 2023. Taichung Bank had been leasing aircraft since 2020 to expand overseas business, but neglected their utilization for 13 months, leading to inappropriate decision-making. The bank also leased high-priced official cars for VIP pickups at a monthly rate of NT$820,000, but the vehicles were only used twice during the lease period, raising concerns about cost-effectiveness.

Former agent of CPBL Rakuten Monkeys’ cheerleading team, Stanley Chen, was arrested by the Taoyuan District Court for private dealings involving the cheerleaders. Chen confessed to breach of trust and misappropriation of business, with evidence supporting serious suspicions, involving approximately NT＄26 million. The case was initially reported by the Rakuten Monkeys team to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office and the Agency Against Corruption in 2023. Chen and the team’s former manager, Pu Wei-ching, were questioned after searches were conducted. Four cheerleaders, business persons, and others were also summoned for statements. Pu was released on bail for NT＄500,000, while the prosecutor requested the court to detain Chen.

The spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), Chen Binhua, denied allegations of Beijing interfering in Taiwan’s elections during a press conference. Chen dismissed the claims made by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as baseless rumors and accused the ruling party in Taiwan of misleading the electorate. Taiwan’s national security agencies have repeatedly warned about interference from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) as the country prepares for the 2024 presidential election. In recent investigations, members of the ＂Union of Chinese Nationalists＂ in Kaohsiung were accused of accepting funds from the TAO for political activities in mainland China. The association is suspected of promoting specific political views and pan-blue support during their travels. The Ciaotou District Prosecutors Office has summoned 22 members for investigation, including individuals named Cheng and Ye, who are accused of violating Taiwan’s Anti-Infiltration Act and Public Officials Election and Recall Act. They have been released on bail with travel restrictions pending further investigation.

The Taipei District Prosecutors Office has requested detention for Chang Tung-ying, the chief partner of cryptocurrency platform JPEX’s Taiwan Office, over alleged fraud. Celebrity Nine Chen, once the spokesperson for JPEX, was called to testify as a witness but later treated as a defendant due to complaints by victims. The Taipei prosecutors directed the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau to carry out searches in nine locations and summoned Chang and three others. Chang and JPEX lecturer Shih Yu-sheng are suspected of violating the Banking Act and the Money Laundering Control Act. Other defendants include salesperson Liu Chien-fu, released on bail of NT＄50,000, and Niu Keng-sheng, the registered person in charge of JPEX Taiwan, who was allowed to return home. Investigations have revealed that Chang and others are suspected of persuading the public to invest in financial products such as the virtual currency JTC, attracting investments with disproportionately high returns.

Super Basketball League (SBL) player Wu Chi-ying has been released on bail after being charged with fraud and match-fixing. The Chinese Taipei Basketball Association has imposed a lifetime ban on Wu, effectively ending his basketball career. Wu was suspected of manipulating and match-fixing games to earn money. He is now facing charges of gambling, fraud, and violation of the Sports Lottery Issuance Act.

The Taipei District Prosecutors Office ordered popular entertainer Mickey Huang to pay a bail of NT$350,000 on Friday (Aug. 4) after being questioned for more than one and a half hours.

A worker surnamed Li faced charges of manslaughter and was released on a NT＄30,000 bail on Friday (July 21), a day following the tragic death of a 21-year-old university student. The unfortunate incident occurred when a 30-kilogram air conditioning unit fell on the student while she was waiting at a bus stop in New Taipei City.
