  • Taiwan’s healthcare outweighs U.S. citizenship: Commentator

Taipei City Hospital’s Chiang Kuan-yu commented on Lai Pei-hsia’s decision to give up her U.S. citizenship, stating that Taiwan’s lighter healthcare and tax burdens outweigh the benefits of U.S. citizenship. Lai, an entertainer, relinquished her U.S. citizenship in order to qualify as the running mate for Foxconn founder Terry Gou in Taiwan’s vice-presidential election. However, the Gou-Lai ticket failed to register for the race, leading many online users in Taiwan to describe Lai as the biggest loser in the electoral contest. Chiang highlighted that many elderly Americans choose to return to Taiwan for superior elderly care and more familial support, as incapacitated seniors in the U.S. often do not survive beyond three years. He characterized Taiwan as "a paradise for the elderly, a promised land for retirement," promoting the country as an ideal place for a comfortable and supported aging experience. Chiang questioned the significance of retaining U.S. citizenship once one’s children are independent, suggesting that Lai may not have lost much by forfeiting her American nationality.

Initially, Gou wanted to host the talks at his residence but later agreed to change the venue to the Grand Hyatt Hotel. On the other hand, Hou insisted that the meeting should take place at former President Ma Ying-jeou’s office. Huang Shih-hsiu, the spokesperson for Gou’s office, stated that they would wait at the Grand Hyatt Hotel until a representative from Hou’s campaign arrived or until 5 a.m. the next morning. Ma Ying-jeou will be attending the talks as a witness, suggesting the significance of this meeting among the leading presidential contenders. • Taiwan braces for cool weather as monsoons approach

Two northeastern monsoons will bring cooler weather and rainfall to different parts of Taiwan starting Thursday (Nov. 22), according to meteorologist Wu De-rong. Rain showers are expected on the windward side of the island, with another monsoon surge arriving on Monday. By Tuesday into Wednesday morning, a strong radiative cooling effect will cause temperatures to drop to around 11 degrees Celsius in Taipei. Despite the temperature drop at night, days will warm up quickly. The entire region is expected to have clear skies today with large diurnal temperature variations. Temperatures across the island range from 14 to 29 degrees in the north and central areas, and 14 to 30 degrees in the south and east. Localized brief showers are expected tomorrow and Saturday along the northern coast, eastern Greater Taipei, and other eastern areas, while regions south of Taoyuan will remain mostly sunny with some cloud cover. As the cold air mass weakens, daytime temperatures in northern Taiwan will slightly cool. By Sunday, as the monsoon eases, the weather is forecasted to improve with a slight temperature increase, though brief showers may still occur in eastern areas.

  • MOA to reward catering industry serving healthy vegetables

The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) in Taiwan has announced that starting in January next year, food service businesses will only receive rewards up to NT $14 per serving if they agree to use organic or traceable agricultural products for 12 varieties of fast-growing vegetables, including bok choy and water spinach. However, the catering industry has expressed concerns about potential price increases during typhoon seasons or cold weather, which could make certified and organic products even more expensive. In response, MOA officials have confirmed that subsidies will be offered to mitigate the impact of vegetable price hikes, with school lunch allowances per serving potentially increasing from NT $3.5 to NT$10, and remote schools eligible for an allowance of up to NT $14 per serving. Chen Mig-hsin, Director of Taiwan’s Food Catering Association, has called for the approval of integrating QR-code usage for verified products during natural disasters, emphasizing the need for additional reward systems to better prepare domestic food suppliers for weather disturbances. Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) Deputy Director Su Mao-hsiang has acknowledged the efforts made by catering businesses to support the MOA’s goals of promoting healthy and affordable school lunches. Currently, over half of the 3,800 tons of vegetables purchased weekly are organic and traceable products, and Su anticipates that the expanded purchase of healthy agricultural foods will further incentivize farmers to produce them.

Gou’s campaign team aims to bring all parties to the table to communicate their goals without any preconditions, highlighting that unity is the key to winning the presidential election. • DPP Lai rumored to team up with representative to the U.S.

Speculations of a planned alliance within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for the 2024 presidential election are increasing. Rumors suggest that DPP presidential candidate Lai Ching-te may team up with Taiwan’s representative to the U.S., Hsiao Bi-khim, as a potential matchup against non-ruling parties. These rumors gained traction after it was discovered that renovation work was being done on a conference room in the DPP central committee’s building, allegedly to accommodate Hsiao’s campaign needs as Lai’s rumored running mate. Further speculations arose that Hung Yao-fu, a prominent figure in mobilizing young social activists and appointees for the DPP’s past electoral successes, may return to Taiwan to assist Hsiao’s campaign. However, a seasoned party staffer dismissed these rumors, stating that the running mate’s campaign strategy would be dependent on the presidential candidate. The candidate’s team for the vice presidency is mainly responsible for routine administrative work. Hsu Chia-hua, a former director of Hsiao’s legislative office, is also considered among the potential campaign members for Lai’s running mate, despite currently being abroad.

  • Cross-strait tensions deter Japanese tourists to Taiwan

The number of Japanese tourists visiting Taiwan has only recovered to 33% of pre-pandemic levels in the first half of 2023. One reason for this is the depreciation of the Japanese yen, but the major concern is the growing cross-strait tensions. The instability in the Taiwan Strait has created unease among Japanese tourists. Maintaining stability and peace in the Taiwan Strait is a key task for the new line-up of top government leaders. Another contributing factor to Japan’s decreased tourism in Taiwan is the rising interest in South Korea, including its Korean pop culture, local delicacies, casinos, and cosmetic surgery services, despite its more expensive cost to visit after the pandemic.
