Nigerian basketball player Ifeanyi Uzoma Eboka has been detained by Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency for an expired residency visa. Eboka, known for his time with the PLG Hsinchu Lioneers, is now facing forced deportation.

The Ministry of the Interior reports that 5.6% of babies born in Taiwan from January to July 2021 have taken their mother’s surname, marking a historic high. Taitung County has the highest rate at 16.85%. This shift reflects a gradual increase in children adopting their mother’s surname, despite Taiwan’s predominantly patrilineal society.

Taiwan’s Interior Minister, Lin Yu-chang, has assured public service firefighters that their demands, including the formation of unions, will be met by the government. The Ministry is considering amendments to the Civil Servant Association Act to accommodate these demands.

As digital transactions simplify everyday life for many in Taiwan, they have also become a convenient tool for scammers targeting unsuspecting victims. Statistics provided by the National Policy Agency (NPA) under the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) reveal that Taiwan has witnessed over 20,000 annual scam cases since 2017.

The Taiwan government’s expanded rent subsidy program, which aims to assist residents in coping with housing costs, is again accepting applications. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. on Dec. 31. This initiative, implemented by the Construction and Planning Agency under the Ministry of the Interior, targets the general public and tenants throughout Taiwan.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, 138,000 newborns were born in 2022, setting a record-low number. 

The Ministry of the Interior aims to remove what they consider ＂symbols of authoritarianism＂ nationwide. It is offering a NT$100,000 subsidy for removing any Chiang Kai Shek or Chiang Ching-kuo statues. The Ministry of the Interior encourages schools, county, and city authorities to remove these statues.
