A survey conducted by online job bank Yes123 revealed that 88.4 percent of Taiwan’s companies plan to hold year-end parties before the Lunar New Year, with employees most eager to receive cash prizes. The survey also found that 60.3 percent of companies with year-end party plans will host lucky draw events. Among the preferred prizes, cash ranked as the top choice with 66.2 percent of employees, followed by smartphones (43.3 percent), cars (42.5 percent), department store vouchers (34.3 percent), and convenience store coupons (33.2 percent). The survey also showed that 73.6 percent of office workers have previously won a prize at year-end parties, with the average value of the biggest prize being NT＄11,833. The spokesperson for Yes123, Yang Tsung-pin, stated that the willingness of companies to hold year-end events has returned to normal, indicating the recovery and stabilization of the economy following the disruptions caused by Covid-19. The survey was conducted online from Dec. 1 to Dec. 14, with 1,366 valid responses and a confidence level of 95 percent and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.65 percent.

The poll was conducted on Dec. 6-7 and targeted residents of Taiwan who are at least 20 years old. The survey had a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.77%, with 1,251 valid respondents.

Notably, 31.7% of respondents express a preference for candidates over party lines, indicating the presence of swing voters who could play a crucial role in the election. The poll surveyed 1,073 individuals aged 20 and above across all 22 municipalities of Taiwan from November 25 to November 27. The results were weighted by gender, age, and household registration location, with a sampling error of plus or minus 2.99% at a 95% confidence level.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that two kilograms of green tea powder imported from Japan were destroyed at the border due to trace amounts of radioactive cesium-137. The batch’s cesium-137 levels were within the acceptable limit of 100 becquerels per kilogram, but the FDA emphasized the importance of ethical practices and urged businesses to adhere to them. The FDA tested the batch on October 31 and found 3 becquerels per kg of cesium-137 and 3 becquerels per kg of cesium-134 plus cesium-137. Since last year, food from five prefectures of Fukushima, Japan, has been imported to Taiwan, provided it meets radiation and origin inspection requirements. The FDA’s regulations for cesium-134 and cesium-137 levels in various food categories are based on the ＂Standards for the Tolerance of Atomic Dust and Radioactivity Contamination in Foods.＂ From 2011 to 2023, Taiwan has tested 224,970 batches of Japanese food, with 252 samples showing trace radioactivity that did not exceed national or Japanese standards.

However, some travel agencies find the pace of this ＂un-banning＂ too slow and have admitted to organizing tour groups to China under the guise of ＂visiting groups.＂ This ban, which has lasted for over three years, has severely impacted over 90% of Taiwan’s 4,000 plus travel agencies operating in the Chinese market.

The latest presidential poll by Newtalk shows that Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) has surpassed Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), while Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang (KMT) has also gained support. Ko leads Lai by 0.52%, and Lai’s lead over Hou is only 0.08%, indicating a closely contested election. However, if Terry Gou were to enter the race, the rankings would change significantly. Lai would still be first, but Hou would move up to second, Ko would drop to third, and Gou would trail at the end with 9.39%. This is the first time in past polls that Hou surpasses Ko. The Bureau of Labor Insurance (BLI) implemented a parental leave allowance scheme in July 2021, providing a 20 percent wage subsidy grant to ease economic pressures on working parents. A year later, an amendment to the Employment Insurance Act allowed both parents to claim the allowance simultaneously. By the end of July this year, the percentage of male claims settled reached 26 percent, with the BLI disbursing a total of $101.4 billion in the first nine months. The parental leave allowance corresponds to 60% of the insured person’s average monthly insurance salary six months before the leave, plus the additional wage subsidy grant, resulting in parents receiving 80 percent of their monthly insurance salary. Since the nationwide release of the subsidy grant, the number of applicants tripled, benefiting eight thousand families last year, a five-fold increase compared to the scheme’s initial launch in 2009.
