  • Northeast monsoon chills northeastern Taiwan

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has announced that a strong northeastern monsoon has brought cooler temperatures to northern and northeastern Taiwan. Western parts of Taiwan can expect significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. The CWA has compared the intensity of the current monsoon to that of a continental cold air mass and advises residents to add layers and keep warm. Low temperatures ranging from 14 to 15 degrees Celsius are expected in central and northern Taiwan, as well as the northeastern regions, while other areas will experience lows of 17 to 19 degrees. The northeast monsoon is predicted to weaken by Friday, resulting in a daytime increase in temperature. Despite the large diurnal temperature range in the western half of Taiwan, most areas will have clear to partly cloudy skies. However, isolated, brief showers are anticipated in the southeastern parts of the island, according to the CWA.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim has clarified that she has never renounced her Republic of China (R.O.C., Taiwan) citizenship, addressing speculations about her nationality status. While she once held U.S. citizenship due to her American mother, she renounced it in 2002 and has documentation to prove it. Hsiao emphasized the importance of having a household registration in Taiwan, as it affects immigration, employment, and treatment. However, she assured the public that on the day she assumed her position as an "overseas compatriot legislator," she obtained her R.O.C. identification card. • Taiwan’s domestic flight prices rise amid oil price surge

Taiwan faces a 4.5% increase in domestic flight ticket prices due to a surge in global oil prices, resulting in an average additional cost of NT$95 per ticket. Kinmen residents, who frequently travel to and from Taiwan, are particularly affected, with Mandarin Airlines’ Taipei to Kinmen route experiencing a one-way fare increase of 7.4%, equivalent to NT$182. This price rise will also impact tourists planning to fly domestically during the New Year’s holiday, making air travel more expensive. As a result, authorities expect a significant increase in road traffic during the New Year’s Eve celebrations. To alleviate transportation challenges during the festive season, Taiwan will implement toll-free periods on freeways from midnight to 5 a.m. The Taiwan Railways Administration and Taiwan High-Speed Rail (THSR) will also increase service frequencies to accommodate the expected passenger volume. THSR has added 105 services and will continue to offer discounts for college students and early bird promotions. Taiwan Railways has scheduled 116 extra trains, anticipating a potential peak of over 800,000 passengers in a single day. However, ticket sales for child-friendly carriages have been temporarily suspended. Additional train services during the New Year transportation period will be available for purchase starting from midnight on December 1, aiming to alleviate travel congestion during the holidays.

In a Facebook announcement, Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) candidate Ko Wen-je’s campaign manager Vivian Huang confirmed that Ko will persist as the TPP’s presidential candidate in Taiwan’s 2024 election. Huang had earlier represented the campaign at the Central Election Commission (CEC) to obtain the necessary forms. Ko’s rival candidate, Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang (KMT), proposed that both parties publicly review nine opinion polls and broadcast the process live, but Huang dismissed the idea, asserting that the scientific data would not change. Huang emphasized that Ko intended to run as the TPP nominee, even without a formal partnership with the KMT. Ko’s campaign spokesman, Austin Tai, reiterated the unwavering nature of Ko’s candidacy and clarified his current status in the race. While Ko plans to hold campaign meetings with his staff on Thursday, he has no intention of registering at the CEC on that day. • Domestic egg supply stable: Minister of Agriculture

Taiwan’s domestic egg production is currently sufficient to meet consumer demands, eliminating the need for imports, according to Acting Minister of Agriculture Chen Junne-jih. Speaking at a joint meeting of the Legislative Yuan’s committees, Chen stated that the country produces around 24 million eggs per day, with approximately 34 million laying hens. While the domestic egg supply is stable, Chen highlighted that some schools’ ban on liquid eggs has weakened consumer demand, leading to increased stock and pressure on national egg production. Chen hopes that the ban can be reconsidered and lifted to maintain stable egg supplies. The potential decrease in egg prices depends on consumer demand, and Chen suggests that incorrect dietary restrictions could create market pressures.

  • Sudden chill hits Taiwan rivaling a continental air mass

Taipei experienced a sudden drop in temperature on November 14, with the morning low reaching 15.2 degrees Celsius. This is due to an intense cold air mass moving southward, which is expected to bring temperatures down to around 10 degrees Celsius throughout the week, particularly affecting coastal and plain areas. National Central University Atmospheric Sciences Professor Wu Der-Romg explained that a weather front arrived on Thursday, causing drastic changes in weather conditions. This front is accompanied by an arctic air mass, resulting in the strongest wave of cold air so far this autumn season. Professor Wu expects the impact of the cold air mass to continue until Saturday morning, with a gradual return to normal temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius the following day. However, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) warned of the return of brisk temperatures as a typhoon approaches Taiwan in the coming weeks. The CWA is closely monitoring the tropical depression brewing east of the Philippine Sea, as it may disrupt future weather patterns in Taiwan.
