TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim said on Monday (Dec. 4) that she has never renounced her Republic of China (R.O.C.,Taiwan) citizenship, addressing speculations about her nationality status.

Hsiao added that although she once had U.S. citizenship due to her American mother, she renounced it in 2002. She claimed to have documentation proving the renunciation and pointed out her multiple terms as a legislator as evidence that her status has been thoroughly vetted.

Having served several terms as a legislator, Hsiao believes she has passed the necessary scrutiny. The discussion around her nationality stemmed from her time working in the Presidential Office in 2000, where confusion arose due to divergent regulations under the Nationality Act and the Household Registration Act.

She further noted that holding a nationality without a household registration in Taiwan could significantly affect immigration, employment, and treatment. However, she emphasized that on the day she assumed her position as an "overseas compatriot legislator," she had obtained her R.O.C. identification card

Hsiao reassured the public that her background had been meticulously vetted, expressing confidence in her and her presidential running mate Lai Ching-te's candidature.

"From start to finish, everything has been checked thoroughly, so everyone has great confidence as we head into the election together," she said.
