  • Ko-Ying ticket’s surge to 3M votes stuns in Taiwan polls

The latest presidential poll reveals that the Ko-Ying ticket of the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) is projected to secure between 2.535 million to 2.726 million votes. My Formosa Chairman Wu Tzu-chia described these numbers as "terrifying." The Lai-Hsiao ticket of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is estimated to receive a vote share of 40.6 percent to 42.7 percent, translating to 5.534 million to 5.820 million votes. The Hou-Kang ticket of the Kuomintang (KMT) is expected to garner 38.6% to 39.6% of the vote, amounting to 5.261 million to 5.398 million votes. The Ko-Ying ticket is anticipated to achieve a vote percentage of 18.6% to 20.0%. Wu emphasized that TPP’s presidential candidate Ko Wen-je holds nearly 3 million votes, which could influence the election’s outcome. Ko’s popularity surged after launching the ’KP Show,’ causing DPP candidate Lai Ching-te’s polling numbers to decrease by nearly two percentage points from 40%. Wu acknowledged the remarkable shift of young voters aligning with Ko Wen-je instead of the KMT.

  • High medical costs abroad: Taipei doctor’s cautionary tale

Taipei Show Chwan Hospital Director Cheng Cheng-chieh incurred a substantial medical bill and received minimal compensation from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance (NHI) after suffering two broken ribs in a skiing accident in the US. Despite being treated at the largest emergency room in Anchorage for over six hours, Cheng only had a six-minute conversation with doctors. The most significant charge on his bill, which totaled approximately NTD$500,000, was NTD$280,000 for computed tomography (CT) scans. Upon returning to Taiwan, Cheng applied for overseas medical coverage from the NHI and was only reimbursed NTD $3,704, a stark contrast to the estimated cost of emergency care in Taiwan. Cheng’s experience highlights the financial risks of high medical costs abroad that are not fully covered by Taiwan’s health insurance system.

  • Taiwan stocks surge 44%, outshine S&P 500 and South Korea

SinoPac Securities Investment Service (SinoPac Inv. Service) has released a report on the Taiwanese stock market, highlighting its impressive growth streak. Taiwan stocks have surged over 44% since 2020 through the end of November, outpacing South Korea’s market and even surpassing the US S&P 500’s gain. The report suggests that Taiwan stocks are poised to set a new high for the year, as the index has successfully breached the critical threshold of 16,800 points. SinoPac Inv. Service also points out that political performance and a thriving stock market are often seen as indicators of the incumbent’s record, with the stock market tending to show an upward trend before the presidential elections. Given the current momentum and what is described as a "multi-bottom pattern," investment strategists at SinoPac are suggesting a "bullish-bias" investment approach. As investors closely monitor economic indicators before making their predictions on the election’s impact, Taiwan’s stock market enters the end-of-year season with robust investor optimism.

  • 70 percent will fight if China attacks, study shows

A paper published by the Washington-based think tank Global Taiwanese Institute reveals findings of mainstream public opinion on Taiwanese defense. The paper, titled "Conversations with the Taiwanese about Taiwan’s Defense," shows that 70 percent of Taiwanese are willing to fight in the event of a Chinese invasion, while 20 percent would leave and 10 percent would choose to surrender. The results are based on conversations conducted by Taiwanese-American U.S. Air Force captain Jimmy Chien during his six-week stay in Taiwan, which included discussions with university students and retirees. Chien’s research challenges the perception that increased military strength and pressure from China could lead to military action, as most Taiwanese do not consider this a likely scenario. He argues that Taiwanese people believe China must first address its domestic affairs before resorting to force against Taiwan. Chien also notes that Taiwanese people are aware that the U.S. military is unlikely to deploy troops in the event of a war, and therefore hope to receive non-combat aid, such as supplies and maintenance, from the U.S. as a show of support in battling enemy forces.
