TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Yushan Weather Station (玉山氣象站) reported snowfall between midnight and 1 a.m. Monday (Jan. 6), leaving a 0.5-centimeter blanket of snow by 6 a.m. The station, adorned with rime ice, presented a striking winter landscape. A fresh cold air mass has swept over Taiwan, causing temperatures to plummet across the island. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) recorded temperatures at Yushan ranging from -1.8 to -2.0 degrees Celsius during the snowfall, with a relative humidity of 63-64%.
CWA has warned that this cold air mass will persist, maintaining chilly conditions until it weakens next week. The cold front has led to decreasing temperatures nationwide. The skies are mostly cloudy to clear, except for sporadic showers in eastern and southeastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula.
The cold wave has also affected road conditions. The Highway Bureay's Central Region Branch Office's (中區養護工程分局) traffic management center inspected road conditions, finding ice on sections of Taiwan Route 14A between Wuling (武嶺) and Songxue Lodge (松雪樓) last Sunday night. Authorities closed the section from Cuifeng (翠峰) to Songxue Lodge as a precaution, reopening it at 7 a.m. Monday. Travelers should remain vigilant as road conditions may change rapidly.
