TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The northeast monsoon will bring chilly conditions across northern Taiwan on Friday (Jan. 3), according to The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). Temperatures in areas from Tainan to Yilan will drop to 13 to 15 degrees Celsius by nightfall.
The administration has issued a strong wind advisory as the northeast winds strengthen in the morning. Scattered showers will affect Greater Taipei, eastern regions, and the Hengchun Peninsula, while southern Yunlin and central mountainous areas will experience increasing cloud cover.
Morning temperatures will range from 15 to 17°C in Kaohsiung northward and Yilan, with Pingtung, Hualien, and Taitung seeing 17 to 20°C. Daytime highs will reach 16 to 18°C in northern Taiwan and 19 to 22°C elsewhere.
Nighttime lows will drop to 13 to 15°C from Tainan northward and in Yilan, with other regions expecting 16 to 18°C. Offshore islands such as Penghu will see temperatures between 16 and 18°C, while Kinmen and Matsu will experience 12 to 17°C and 10 to 14°C, respectively.
The strong wind advisory warns of force 9 to 10 gusts from Miaoli to Tainan, the Hengchun Peninsula, Orchid Island (蘭嶼), Green Island (綠島), and Penghu. Strong gusts will also affect Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Kinmen, and Matsu coastal areas, and rough seas are expected nearby.
If conditions align, the CWA notes a chance of sporadic snowfall on mountains above 3,500 meters in central and northern regions.
