TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A weather expert predicted on Wednesday (Dec. 25) that temperatures could fall to 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in open areas north of Miaoli (苗栗) from late Saturday night to early Sunday morning. Snow could be expected on Yushan (玉山) between late Friday night to early Saturday morning.
Chia Hsin-sing (賈新興), director of the Taiwan Integrated Disaster Prevention of Technology Engineering Consulting (台灣整合防災工程技術顧問公司), noted that the northeast monsoon will strengthen on Thursday, bringing brief showers to areas north of Taoyuan (桃園) and the eastern regions of Yilan (宜蘭), Hualien (花蓮), and Taitung (台東).
He also forecasted sporadic rain in mountainous areas of New Taipei (新北) and Yilan on Friday, with a stronger continental cold air mass impacting the eastern and southern mountain regions over the weekend.
Taiwan braces for a cold snap this weekend, with temperatures expected to drop significantly in the northern regions. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) reported scattered showers along the northern coast of Keelung (基隆) and the eastern parts of Taiwan today, with stable weather elsewhere.
The CWA reported that temperatures range from a comfortable 16-18°C in the morning, rising to 21-23°C in the north and northeast, and 24-26°C in other regions, making it ideal for outdoor activities. As the cold air mass approaches, residents should prepare for chilly conditions, particularly in northern Taiwan, and monitor updates from weather authorities.
