TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a cold weather alert for five counties on Monday (Dec. 23) as a continental cold air mass continues to grip Taiwan, causing temperatures to plummet below 10 degrees Celsius. This cold snap also coincides with the potential formation of Tropical Depression TD30 into Typhoon Pabuk (帕布), which could increase moisture levels across the island.
Miaoli County recorded the nation's lowest temperature at 7.3 degrees Celsius this morning. New Taipei City and Yilan County have issued orange alerts, indicating a high likelihood of temperatures around or below 10 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, and Kinmen County remain under yellow alerts, signaling a chance of cold conditions.
The CWA has also issued a land wind advisory, warning of strong gusts ranging from 9 to 10 on the Beaufort scale in coastal areas from Taoyuan to Tainan and on the Hengchun Peninsula. Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) predicts another cold front will arrive on Dec. 27, potentially bringing even lower temperatures due to "radiative cooling" effects.
Meanwhile, meteorologist Lin Te-en (林得恩) noted that moisture levels are expected to decrease by the afternoon of Dec. 24. Although Typhoon Pabuk poses no direct threat to Taiwan, its outer circulation will bring increased moisture. Additionally, there remains a chance of ice, frost, or isolated snow above 3,000 meters from today through tomorrow morning.
Stay tuned for updates as weather conditions evolve and prepare for potential cold and windy conditions.
