TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold spell has prompted the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) to issue a low-temperature warning for six counties and cities in Taiwan on Thursday (Dec. 19). Residents in parts of New Taipei City and Yilan County should prepare for a chilly forecast, as temperatures could drop to 10 degrees Celsius or lower through Friday morning.
Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, and Kinmen County also face the possibility of sub-10 degrees. According to CWA data, New Taipei City recorded the island's lowest temperature at 9.4°C at 10:20 a.m. on Thursday. Early morning temperatures hovered around 10°C in Shiding (石碇), Fugui Cape (富貴角), and Sanxing (三星).
CWA weather forecaster Lin Ping-yu (林秉煜) noted that northern and central Taiwan, along with Yilan, Hualien, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, will feel notably cold throughout the day.
Lin added that southern Taiwan and Taitung will experience cooler temperatures in the early morning and evening, with a slight chill overnight. Lin emphasized that Thursday marks the coldest point of this cold front, with low temperatures persisting into Friday morning but expected to rise significantly during the day.
Forecasters predict high temperatures will reach 20 to 24°C in central and southern Taiwan on Friday, while northern Taiwan will remain cooler, with highs of 16 to 18°C. Residents should prepare for the cold and stay informed as temperatures fluctuate.
