Among residents below 35 years old, 83% identified as purely Taiwanese, and among women, 72% identified as exclusively Taiwanese. Despite this, 40% of respondents still had emotional ties to mainland China, with 11% maintaining strong emotions towards it. The survey also revealed a bearish outlook on China, with 66% of adults perceiving China’s power and influence as a threat. Both DPP and Kuomintang (KMT) voters considered China a major threat to Taiwan, with 78% and 59% respectively. However, KMT supporters were more likely to view the U.S. as a principal threat compared to DPP supporters. In terms of domestic issues, only 10% of KMT supporters were satisfied with the current state of living, compared to 48% of DPP supporters.

A report by the German think-tank Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation for Freedom (FNF) argues that the issue between Taiwan and China is ＂not unification but forced unification.＂ The report, written by National Taiwan University’s sociology Ph.D. candidate, Sie Da-wun, and FNF Global Innovation Hub’s Program Officer, Lai Yu-fen, challenges the common misinterpretation of Taiwanese political parties. They assert that assuming the Kuomintang (KMT) supports unification because it is pro-China and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supports independence because it is anti-China is an oversimplification. The report highlights that since Taiwan’s democratization, the Taiwanese people have consistently opposed ＂annexation＂ or ＂unification＂ imposed by the Beijing government.

Three workers fell unconscious in a soy sauce tank at the Chung Kung Soy Sauce factory in Tainan due to low oxygen levels. The Tainen Fire Bureau successfully rescued the workers, but two remain in critical condition. The incident occurred when one worker entered a ventilation hole to clean soy sauce residues, and his colleagues collapsed when they entered to assist. The factory usually cleans the tank from above but decided to enter it this time. The lack of ventilation led to the unfortunate consequences.

A paper published by the Washington-based think tank Global Taiwanese Institute reveals findings of mainstream public opinion on Taiwanese defense. The paper, titled ＂Conversations with the Taiwanese about Taiwan’s Defense,＂ shows that 70 percent of Taiwanese are willing to fight in the event of a Chinese invasion, while 20 percent would leave and 10 percent would choose to surrender. The results are based on conversations conducted by Taiwanese-American U.S. Air Force captain Jimmy Chien during his six-week stay in Taiwan, which included discussions with university students and retirees. Chien’s research challenges the perception that increased military strength and pressure from China could lead to military action, as most Taiwanese do not consider this a likely scenario. He argues that Taiwanese people believe China must first address its domestic affairs before resorting to force against Taiwan. Chien also notes that Taiwanese people are aware that the U.S. military is unlikely to deploy troops in the event of a war, and therefore hope to receive non-combat aid, such as supplies and maintenance, from the U.S. as a show of support in battling enemy forces.
