Taiwan is preparing for a cold wave that will bring temperatures as low as 7 degrees Celsius along the coast, according to meteorological expert Daniel Wu. The Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX) has launched its first international carbon credit transactions, offering credits sourced from various regions in Asia, Africa, and South America. Notable companies such as TSMC, Foxconn, China Steel Corporation, and Taiwan Financial Holding have expressed interest in participating in the inaugural trade event. The initial batch of credits available on the Taiwan Carbon Exchange is estimated to range from 50,000 to 100,000 tons and has been certified by the Gold Standard. Once procured, these credits cannot be resold on the carbon exchange platform, and their use will be determined by each company’s individual needs. It is important to note that these credits have international ＂voluntary＂ carbon rights and do not fall under ＂mandatory＂ carbon pricing, meaning they cannot be used to offset Europe’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

A new survey conducted by Cathay Financial Holding reveals that 59.3% of respondents expect their year-end bonuses for 2023 to be between one to three months’ worth of salary. Currently, Taiwan has agreements with only four countries, but India is considered a promising addition. Hsu emphasized that the MOU has not been signed yet and discussions on importing labor from India are ongoing. The Livestock Disease Control Center of Chiayi County culled 35,000 quails due to an outbreak of the H5N1 virus. The infection was confirmed at a quail farm in Xikou Township, Chiayi County. This is the first avian flu outbreak in the county since the start of Autumn. The farm reported diarrhea and abnormal deaths among its quails, leading to suspicions of avian influenza. Lab results confirming the H5N1 infection were received. The farm has experienced two previous outbreaks of avian flu, prompting calls for improved management practices and biosecurity measures.
