TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) graced the cover of Time Magazine, with an exclusive interview published on Thursday (June 13), discussing cross-strait relations and Taiwan's international standing.
In the interview, Lai emphasized that his inauguration speech on May 20, which mentioned "the two sides of the Taiwan Strait do not belong to each other," was a factual statement based on the Constitution of the Republic of China, not a provocation.
Lai pointed out that similar statements had been made by former Presidents Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), in response to China's military exercises triggered by his remarks.
He highlighted the significant differences in the economic nature between Taiwan and China, noting that many Taiwanese businesses have already left China. According to Lai, this makes the timing for reopening trade negotiations with China inappropriate.
Lai expressed Taiwan's sincere attitude towards foreign relations, adding that he wished the best for the diplomatic allies that chose to establish ties with the People's Republic of China.
He stressed that China's oppressive measures would not deter Taiwan from being a beacon of freedom and democracy. The Taiwanese President called on countries worldwide to respect the Taiwanese people's choices and help the international community understand and support Taiwan.
He also reiterated Taiwan's commitment to deepening democracy and maintaining regional peace despite China's attempts to annex Taiwan. He urged global support for Taiwan's democratic values and its role in the international community.
