TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) underscored Taiwan’s commitment to comprehensive cooperation with the European Union at the Europe Day dinner in Taipei on Thursday (June 13), celebrating 30 years of trade between Taiwan and European countries. His remarks came just four days after the European elections.

“Europe is home to a great number of mature democracies,” Lai said. “While Taiwan and Europe may be separated by a great distance, we are actually very close in our determination to advance democracy, peace, prosperity, and sustainability.”

Strengthening Economic Ties
Lai highlighted the significant and growing trade relationship between Taiwan and Europe. Last year, trade volumes between Taiwan and Europe reached another record high, establishing the EU as Taiwan's foremost source of foreign investment. “Europe is Taiwan's third-largest trading partner, as well as our largest source of foreign investment,” Lai noted.

Looking ahead, Lai expressed hopes for an economic partnership agreement with the EU, which he believes would foster a better investment environment and create more business opportunities for both sides. “Taiwan is ready and willing to work with European nations to address global issues together,” he said.

Commitment to Shared Values
The president emphasized that Taiwan and the EU share a strong commitment to democracy, peace, and the rule of law, which strengthens their partnership towards a more secure and prosperous future. “Taiwan will continue to serve as the pilot for peace and work for prosperity around the world. And support from Europe gives Taiwan strength to keep forging ahead, side by side,” he stated.

Lai’s remarks underscore Taiwan’s strategic importance as a democratic ally in the Asia-Pacific region and its role in global economic and security frameworks. His appeal for stronger economic ties with Europe reflects Taiwan’s broader strategy to diversify its trade partnerships amid increasing geopolitical tensions.

As Taiwan continues to navigate complex international dynamics, its alignment with Europe on democratic values and economic collaboration marks a pivotal chapter in its foreign policy. Lai’s speech at the Europe Day dinner not only celebrated past achievements but also charted a course for future cooperation and mutual prosperity.
