TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Morris Chang (張忠謀), the founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電), will release the second volume of his autobiography on Friday (Nov. 29). In an exclusive interview with Global Views Monthly (遠見), Chang revealed that writing his autobiography often brought him to tears, as it felt like reliving his life. He also expressed relief after submitting the manuscript, marking 26 years since the first volume's publication in 1998.
Chang's complete autobiography spans nearly 300,000 words. Due to the pandemic and health issues, the writing process faced multiple interruptions. At 93, he completed the nearly 200,000-word second volume, which covers 54 years of his life. The autobiography is divided into three major phases: Chang's 25 years at Texas Instruments, his three-year tenure as president of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (工研院), and his time at TSMC.
Global Views Monthly also interviewed Chang's wife, Sophie Chang (張淑芬), chairperson of the TSMC charity foundation. As a witness and a character in the book, she played a significant role in the writing process. Chang previously acknowledged her contributions, stating his achievements include "not only TSMC but also Sophie," recognizing her expertise in painting and philanthropy.
