TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Mark Liu (劉德音), former chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電), emphasized the importance of maintaining Taiwan's technological edge on Tuesday (Nov. 26). Speaking at a Pen Wen Yuan Foundation event, Liu urged Taiwan not to hold silicon technologies as a talisman and should instead note that the semiconductor technology undergoes significant changes every two years, which is crucial for the nation's interests.
Liu highlighted the global trend of AI opportunities, asserting Taiwan's numerous advantages in this field. He encouraged young people to engage actively, stating that AI offers a long-term trend with broad applications. Addressing concerns about a potential future Trump administration's impact on Taiwan's semiconductor industry, Liu reassured that Taiwan's success aligns with U.S. interests.
He stressed the need for unity and maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait, identifying Taiwan as a hotspot for misinformation. Liu pointed out that aligning Taiwan's interests with the U.S., especially in defense, economy, and technology, is vital. He also addressed rumors of U.S. pressure on TSMC to accelerate advanced technology production in America, arguing that keeping the most advanced products in Taiwan benefits both countries.
Liu further suggested that Taiwan should develop a unique strategy for power infrastructure, considering its limitations in solar installations. He advocated for making Taiwan welcoming to global talent and encouraged local talent to gain experience abroad. Liu cited South Africa's rugby team as an example of national unity, urging Taiwan to foster opportunities for its youth to shine internationally.
