TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A strong continental cold air mass sent temperatures plummeting across Taiwan on Thursday (Jan. 16), according to WeatherRisk (天氣風險公司). An easterly wind shift will cause temperatures to rise next Monday, with daytime highs around 20°C and nighttime lows at 14-15°C.
WeatherRisk analyst Liao Yu-ting (廖于霆), however, stated that another wave of northeast monsoon and cold air will descend on Tuesday, bringing lows of 14-15°C and daytime highs of 18-19°C. Although this dry air mass is unlikely to disrupt New Year's events, increased cloud cover in the northeast may affect sunrise views in Hualien and Taitung.
Today's cold snap, characterized by dry air, has brought mostly cloudy to clear skies, with only sporadic rain in the east. Liao noted that the chill could set new lows for the season, especially at night. As the cold air weakens by Sunday, clearer skies will lead to significant day-night temperature differences, with daytime highs reaching 17-20°C and nighttime lows potentially falling below 10°C.
Authorities advise the public to dress warmly, especially during early morning and evening outdoor activities, to prevent health issues. Farmers and fishery operators should implement cold protection measures to safeguard crops and aquaculture against potential cold damage.
