TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) warned on Wednesday (Dec. 18) that a continental cold air mass has caused temperatures to drop significantly in Taiwan, prompting a cold weather advisory for Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, and Nantou County. Temperatures in these areas may plunge below 10 degrees Celsius.
Meteorologist Lin Te-en (林得恩) predicted another cold front will arrive from Saturday to next Tuesday, bringing a high probability of snowfall in mountainous regions with more pronounced accumulation. Meanwhile, weather forecast anchor James Tai (戴立綱) stated on his YouTube channel on Monday that temperatures could dip to 12 to 13 degrees Celsius this week, with the cold air mass affecting the region from tonight through Thursday.
The CWA also noted that Keelung's north coast, the Greater Taipei regions, and the Yilan-Hualien areas will experience sporadic showers. Taitung and Hengchun Peninsula may see isolated rain, while other regions will remain partly cloudy to sunny, the administration added.
Forecasters predict that if cold temperatures coincide with moisture, there is a chance of icing, rime, or sporadic snowfall at elevations above 3,000 meters in central Taiwan and around 2,000 meters or higher in northern and northeastern regions.
