NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) vowed on Monday (Jan. 6) to hold the responsible parties accountable following a building collapse on Liuzhang St. (六張街) in Sanchong District (三重). The incident has prompted New Taipei City officials to expand evacuation efforts after construction work caused instability.
The Public Works Department of New Taipei City (新北市工務局) reported that basement excavation led to the tilting of adjacent buildings, forcing the emergency evacuation of residents from No. 184, No. 190, and No. 192 Liuzhang St. Officials originally planned to demolish the severely tilted illegal structures on the third and fourth floors of No. 190 that evening. However, No. 184 collapsed unexpectedly, though fortunately, there were no injuries.
The Public Works Department, along with the New Taipei City Professional Civil Engineers Association (新北市土木技師公會), began safety inspections at the site at noon and continue to monitor the situation closely. Hou emphasized that the city government will demolish potentially dangerous structures overnight to ensure public safety and protect residents' rights. He insisted that those responsible must bear the cost of damages.
Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as demolition and monitoring efforts proceed. The city government remains committed to resolving the situation and preventing future incidents.
