TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Authorities swiftly recaptured Wang Tien-you (王天佑), an inmate who escaped from Green Island Prison (綠島監獄) on Monday (Jan. 6) after he was found hiding near the rooftop of a staff dormitory during an evening patrol. Officials then successfully persuaded him to surrender.
Wang managed to escape around 2 p.m. when a guard escorted him and another inmate to a storeroom. The Taitung County Police Bureau (台東縣警察局) immediately launched a manhunt after he ran, deploying approximately 40 officers, including local police and prison staff, to search the island.
Police noted that Wang, clad only in a raincoat, shorts, and a beanie, likely struggled against the cold sea winds, prompting him to return to the prison. The escape had left Green Island residents on edge, with many locking their doors and windows, turning the usually lively area eerily quiet.
With Wang's capture, residents breathed a sigh of relief, feeling secure enough to sleep peacefully once again. This incident underscores the importance of timely law enforcement response and community vigilance in maintaining public safety.
