TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Monday (Jan. 6) welcomed the new Guatemalan ambassador to Taiwan, Luis Raúl Estévez López (艾特維), at the Presidential Office. He expressed optimism about building on the 90-year friendship between the two nations. Citing Estévez's 32 years of diplomatic experience, President Lai praised Estévez as an outstanding diplomat, and highlighted his roles with the Organization of American States and the International Court of Justice.

President Lai noted that Estévez's appointment underscores Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo's (阿雷巴洛) commitment to the bilateral relationship. Recent years have seen increased collaboration between Taiwan and Guatemala in healthcare, agricultural technology, and education. Estévez presented his credentials, symbolizing Guatemala's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Taiwan. Lai thanked Guatemala for its continued support of Taiwan's international participation and expressed hope for further mutual support and prosperity under Estévez's guidance.

Estévez underscored the shared values of peace, democracy, and mutual benefit, which form the foundation of the countries' relationship. He expressed his hope that future generations in both nations will recognize the efforts made to solidify their friendship and create more well-being for their people.
