TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday (Dec. 4) addressed the recent unrest in South Korea after the president declared martial law and then lifted it six hours later, stating that the National Security Council (國安會) promptly informed him of the situation and implemented measures to ensure Taiwan's national security.
Lai, currently on a Pacific tour of diplomatic allies, took to Facebook to emphasize the importance of safeguarding both national security and the safety of Taiwanese citizens in South Korea. As the situation in South Korea evolves, Lai's administration remains vigilant and ready to respond to any developments that may arise.
The president added that his commitment to democracy remains steadfast as he continues his itinerary, traveling across three countries and two time zones from the Marshall Islands to Tuvalu, and ending his day in Guam.
Reflecting on Taiwan's democratic journey, Lai noted that the island's democratic values are hard-won. He asserted that democracy and freedom form the foundation of Taiwan's international relationships and are cherished ways of life that must be protected for future generations.
