TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) announced on Wednesday (Dec. 4) that it has been closely monitoring the situation in South Korea following the recent political unrest. The ministry emphasized maintaining communication with South Korea's foreign ministry to ensure the safety of Taiwanese citizens residing there.
The MOFA released a statement in the morning advising Taiwanese nationals to avoid participating in local political gatherings, rallies, and demonstrations. It also urged those traveling in South Korea to remain vigilant about their safety.
This guidance came after South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol (尹錫悅) declared martial law late Tuesday at 10:20 p.m. local time, accusing the opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and obstructing governmental operations through impeachment and budgetary delays.
Taiwan's MOFA reported last night that it had briefed Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) on the developments and pledged to stay in close contact with major allied countries. The situation evolved rapidly, with South Korea's National Assembly passing a resolution early Wednesday at 4:30 a.m. local time to nullify the martial law declaration.
