TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) received a warm welcome from the Taiwanese community and Guam's officials during a stopover on Wednesday (Dec. 4). After visiting Tuvalu, Lai's small aircraft landed at Guam International Airport, where U.S. Representative Alexander Tah-ray Yui and AIT Managing Director Ingrid Larson greeted him.
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and her husband, Jeffrey Cook, welcomed Lai with leis at the airport. Guam Daily Post reported that the governor planned to meet with Lai to highlight Taiwan's diplomatic challenges with China. Guam's Legislature Speaker Therese M. Terlaje had previously received a call from China's Los Angeles consulate urging her to avoid Taiwan-related events and reaffirming the One China policy.
Lai will become the first Taiwanese president to enter Guam's Legislature, where Speaker Terlaje will present a resolution underscoring the strong ties between Taiwan and Guam. After concluding a breakfast meeting at 10:30 a.m., Lai will visit the Legislature at 10:45 a.m. for a closed-door discussion with lawmakers. Lai will then host a banquet at his hotel, attended by Governor Guerrero, Speaker Terlaje, Larson, and over 300 Taiwanese expatriates. Following his Guam visit, Lai will proceed to Palau, strengthening Taiwan's diplomatic engagements in the region.
