TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) convened a virtual national security meeting on Wednesday (Dec. 4) in Guam to address South Korea's emergency martial law declaration. The meeting, part of Lai's "Smart and Sustainable Development for a Prosperous Austronesian Region" tour, lasted approximately 40 minutes and aimed to assess the situation's impact on regional stability.
Key Taipei officials, including Secretary-General of the National Security Council Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄), and National Security Council advisor Alex Huang (黃重諺), participated in the meeting. Accompanying Lai on the trip, Secretary-General Pan Men-an (潘孟安) and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) also attended the session, highlighting its significance.
President Lai directed his national security team to maintain close communication, ensuring comprehensive awareness of security developments. He expressed gratitude for their prompt response to the South Korean martial law situation and stressed the need for collaboration with democratic allies. Lai stated that democracy and freedom are the shared values through which Taiwan connects with the world, reaffirming Taiwan's commitment to regional peace and stability.
