TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo (顧立雄) addressed rumors on Tuesday (Oct. 1) about President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) allegedly losing his temper during a military promotion ceremony in early August.
Recent media reports had suggested that President Lai became upset when military officers failed to stand in his presence, and threw documents to the ground. In response, Koo clarified that President Lai, as the commander-in-chief, did not display anger or throw objects during the incident.
Koo explained the misunderstanding occurred because President Lai entered the room unexpectedly, and the round seating arrangement caused a delay in the officers' reaction.
Koo dismissed claims of any outburst, reiterating that there was no issue of President Lai asserting authority, and that reminding military personnel of proper etiquette is appropriate for the commander-in-chief.
Regarding reports that Koo used a microphone to ease tensions after President Lai's "reminder," he acknowledged making some clarifications but downplayed the incident as a minor prelude to the tea gathering. He further urged against exaggerating the event.
