TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Shanshan (珊珊), the 10th typhoon of the year, formed at 2 a.m. on Thursday (Aug. 22). Currently classified as a mild typhoon, its strength continues to increase, potentially upgrading to a moderate typhoon as it makes a significant turn northward.

Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) analyzed that Shanshan will move slowly over the next two days. After the northern high pressure weakens, the eastern Pacific high pressure will guide it north-northwest toward Japan, with a trend of strengthening to moderate or above.

The latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model simulations from 8 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 21) show a high probability of Shanshan turning northeast to impact Japan. However, the exact landfall location and timing remain uncertain and require further observation.

From August to now, six typhoons have formed in the northwest of the Pacific Ocean, exceeding the August climate average of 5.4 typhoons. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported that Taiwan, along with Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, will experience sunny to partly cloudy skies with high temperatures ranging from 33 to 35 degrees Celsius, potentially reaching up to 36 degrees in some areas.

This morning, the central and southern regions had a chance of brief showers. In the afternoon, thunderstorms are likely in the northern and eastern regions and other mountainous areas, with a possibility of heavy rainfall.

On Friday (Aug. 23), moisture levels will decrease. However, localized thunderstorms may still occur in the northern and eastern regions and other mountainous areas, with a chance of heavy rain due to strong convection.

Over the weekend, moisture will increase, expanding the area of afternoon thunderstorms. Rain is expected in the western regions and mountainous areas.

Next week, from Monday (Aug. 26) to Wednesday (Aug. 28), Taiwan will see increased moisture and unstable weather, with scattered brief showers in the central and southern regions from morning to noon.

Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu will also experience occasional localized showers, while other regions will have increased cloud cover and localized afternoon thunderstorms, with a chance of heavy rain.
