TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is experiencing unstable weather on Wednesday (Aug. 14) as the island remains under the influence of a low-pressure system, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). Coastal areas in the western region saw scattered showers from early morning until noon, with localized thunderstorms expected in the afternoon.
Meteorologist Wu De-rong (吳德榮) noted in his column that the low-pressure circulation will persist until Sunday. Taiwan, located on the edge of this system, will experience prevailing southwesterly winds carrying moisture, leading to an unstable atmosphere and increasing the likelihood of afternoon thunderstorms.
Wu warned that the southwest monsoon passing over Taiwan on Monday and Tuesday next week could potentially cause torrential rain due to orographic lift, necessitating close monitoring.
Regarding typhoon updates, Wu predicted that Tropical Storm Ampil would intensify into a "moderate typhoon" on Wednesday. Guided by the low-pressure circulation, Ampil's edge is expected to skim southeastern Honshu, Japan, on Friday before accelerating away.
Wu mentioned that four typhoons have formed in the Pacific over the past week. Only Typhoon Maria made landfall in northern Honshu, while Ampil's edge is expected to brush southeastern Honshu. The other two, Typhoon Son-Tinh and Typhoon Wukong, did not impact any land areas and had no effect on Taiwan's weather.
