TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (氣象署) recorded a chilly 10.2 degrees Celsius in Hsinchu County's Guanxi Township (關西鎮) early Monday (March 24), marking the coldest spot on the island. Meteorologist Wu De-rong (吳德榮), a respected weather expert, warned that residents should prepare for a dramatic weather transformation in the coming days. The unusual temperature fluctuation forecast has prompted weather authorities to issue advisories as the island prepares to experience what could be one of the season's most significant weather shifts.

Wu delivered a stark forecast of meteorological whiplash for the island, predicting that temperatures will soar above 30 degrees Celsius through Thursday as high-pressure systems dominate the region. This brief summer-like interlude will come to an abrupt end when a powerful cold front sweeps across Taiwan on Friday, plunging temperatures and bringing back conditions more reminiscent of winter than spring. The dramatic temperature swing — potentially dropping more than 10 degrees in less than 24 hours — represents an unusual weather pattern that could challenge both infrastructure and public health systems.

In his regular weather column published through National Central University (中央大學), Wu elaborated on the timing of this significant weather event. According to European meteorological model simulations, the cold front is expected to arrive in the early hours of Friday, bringing scattered precipitation across various regions of the island. The approaching system will trigger noticeable atmospheric instability and rapidly changing conditions. Wu also cautioned that before the temperature plunge, morning fog could significantly reduce visibility in western Taiwan through Thursday morning, potentially affecting commuters and transportation systems.

Wu emphasized the exceptional nature of the coming temperature reversal, urging the public to prepare for what will feel like a seasonal regression in just 24 hours. Thursday's summer-like conditions — with temperatures potentially reaching the low 30s Celsius — will rapidly give way to winter-like cold that will persist from Friday through Sunday. This meteorological phenomenon represents one of the more dramatic temperature fluctuations in recent memory, requiring residents to plan accordingly for both hot weather activities and subsequent cold protection measures within the same week.

Relief from the cold snap will arrive gradually as the weather system begins to moderate from Monday through Wednesday of the following week. While temperatures will slowly recover toward seasonal norms, northern regions of Taiwan will continue experiencing relatively calm but persistently rainy conditions. This extended period of precipitation could impact outdoor activities and potentially cause localized flooding in areas with poor drainage. Weather authorities recommend residents in northern Taiwan prepare for several days of wet weather even as temperatures begin their slow climb back to more comfortable levels.
