TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan enjoyed clear to partly cloudy skies on Friday (March 21), offering a respite from recent weather patterns. While most of the island remained dry, forecasters predict the possibility of brief, scattered showers in the eastern regions of Hualien and Taitung, as well as the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島). The rest of the country can expect to enjoy the predominantly sunny conditions.
The radiative cooling effect overnight led to a dramatic temperature dip across Taiwan, creating a stark contrast between the chilly mornings and the relatively balmy afternoons. Northern Taiwan, including Yilan, experienced lows ranging from 7 to 11 degrees Celsius. Hsinchu and Miaoli counties shivered under even colder conditions, with temperatures plummeting to a frigid 4 degrees Celsius. This contrasted sharply with the pleasant daytime warmth in western Taiwan, where temperatures reached a comfortable 23 to 25 degrees Celsius.
WeatherRisk (天氣風險) director Chia Hsin-hsing (賈新興) cautioned residents to be prepared for the significant temperature swings. He strongly advised dressing warmly, especially during the early morning and late evening hours, to avoid catching a chill. While western Taiwan experienced a noticeable difference between day and night temperatures, the Kaohsiung-Pingtung and Hualien-Taitung regions were expected to see daytime temperatures reach a milder 13 to 15 degrees Celsius.
While a gradual warming trend is expected across Taiwan next week, residents in the western half of the island should still anticipate significant day-night temperature variations. A weather front is forecast to arrive next Thursday, bringing with it the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms, particularly impacting western and northeastern areas. According to Chia Hsin-hsing, temperatures will remain slightly cooler from next Friday until April 5, before a more consistent warming pattern emerges towards the end of April.
