TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Ten athletes participating in the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games in Taichung have reportedly suffered from possible food poisoning, with nine seeking medical treatment. According to the Taichung City Office of Food and Drug Safety on Tuesday (April 30), all those treated have since returned to their hotel to rest.
The athletes reportedly fell ill after consuming breakfast at the hotel, with many experiencing symptoms of vomiting. The athletes suspect the issue may lie with the lettuce salad served at the hotel's buffet.
Fu Chiung-hui, head of the Taichung City Office of Food and Drug Safety, stated that the health bureau has launched an investigation following reports from the hospital. A food poisoning investigation team was immediately activated to examine the case and the dining facilities.
According to Fu, samples from leftover food and the environment have been collected for testing, while samples from patients and kitchen staff are still being gathered. Test results are expected within two weeks.
To prevent further spread, the hotel has been ordered to suspend meal services for two days starting Tuesday.
Fu noted that the food safety office inspected the hotel's kitchen area on Monday and found issues with food labeling and refrigerator temperature management. If the comprehensive assessment indicates food poisoning, the case will be transferred to the prosecutor's office for investigation.
