  • Taiwan braces for cool weather as monsoons approach

Two northeastern monsoons will bring cooler weather and rainfall to different parts of Taiwan starting Thursday (Nov. 22), according to meteorologist Wu De-rong. Rain showers are expected on the windward side of the island, with another monsoon surge arriving on Monday. By Tuesday into Wednesday morning, a strong radiative cooling effect will cause temperatures to drop to around 11 degrees Celsius in Taipei. Despite the temperature drop at night, days will warm up quickly. The entire region is expected to have clear skies today with large diurnal temperature variations. Temperatures across the island range from 14 to 29 degrees in the north and central areas, and 14 to 30 degrees in the south and east. Localized brief showers are expected tomorrow and Saturday along the northern coast, eastern Greater Taipei, and other eastern areas, while regions south of Taoyuan will remain mostly sunny with some cloud cover. As the cold air mass weakens, daytime temperatures in northern Taiwan will slightly cool. By Sunday, as the monsoon eases, the weather is forecasted to improve with a slight temperature increase, though brief showers may still occur in eastern areas.

  • US reiterates stance on Taiwan in bilateral talks

The story discusses the statements made by John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, regarding the United States’ stance on Taiwan’s independence and the desire to avoid conflict over the island. Kirby emphasized that the U.S. does not support Taiwan’s independence and does not want to see a unilateral change in Taiwan’s status quo, particularly through the use of force. He expressed hope that President Joe Biden would continue to convey to Chinese President Xi Jinping that the U.S. will adhere to the Taiwan Relations Act and assist Taiwan in maintaining its self-defense capabilities. The article also mentions that Biden and Xi held bilateral talks, their second face-to-face meeting since November, and that Biden would discuss concerns about China’s non-interference in Taiwanese elections. It remains unclear whether Biden will meet with Taiwanese APEC representative Morris Chang at the summit.

  • Taiwan expects stable weather with isolated heavy rains

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) predicts stable weather conditions across Taiwan, with mostly cloudy to clear skies for the first half of Friday (Nov.10). However, a weather front is expected to pass through in the afternoon, bringing isolated heavy rain to the north coast of Keelung and mountainous areas of northern Taiwan. Meteorologist Wu Te-jung estimates that the island will experience sharp temperature drops due to the arrival of its first wave of continental air mass starting next Monday, with the country’s plain areas forecasted to drop below 15 degrees Celsius at their lowest. In the morning hours of Wednesday and Thursday, as northeast winds weaken, there will be a slight improvement in weather and a brief rise in temperature. However, the east of Taiwan can expect brief showers during this time. With continental highs hanging over the island, most regions across Taiwan are forecasted to remain relatively stable next Friday. Wu also foresees slight chills brought on by the effects of Taiwan’s first projected wave of cold air mass, offsetting daytime warmth, as "radiative cooling" (RC) causes bodies to lose heat at night.

  • Taiwan records lowest temperature after Lidong at 18.3°C

Taiwan experienced its lowest temperature of the winter season with a high of 18.3 degrees Celsius reported at Hualien Liyu Lake, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The island-wide temperature ranged between 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Despite the weakening of the northeast monsoon, it was forecasted to be cloudy to clear over Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu regions. Isolated showers were expected in the southeast and the Hengchun Peninsula, with a chance of showers in other mountainous areas during the afternoon. Afternoon temperatures were predicted to warm up to 30 degrees Celsius nationwide. A stalled front from Zhejiang, China, and extending west to Sichuan, China, is approaching Taiwan, potentially bringing cooler weather to the northern and northeastern regions. Local sporadic showers are expected in Kinmen Matsu regions, with the possibility of local heavy rain estimated for the Keelung North Coast and northeastern mountain regions. Along with Penghu, central and southern regions of Taiwan are expected to continue to experience mostly cloudy to clear weather, with the possibility of afternoon showers in the mountains.
