TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan Popular Science Train, a staple event in its eighth year, set off from Taipei Main Station on Monday (Oct. 30), bringing the thrill of scientific discovery to students nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Premier Chen Chien-jen lauded Taiwan's digital economic growth and its push for technological advancement and expressed hopes of stimulating more interest in science among school students.

Meanwhile, Minister Without Portfolio Wu Tsung-tsong, who chairs the National Science and Technology Council, and Digital Minister Audrey Tang also attended the kickoff ceremony.

Chen highlighted Taiwan's global recognition for its tech advancements and encouraged students to aspire to be scientists like Wu and Tang and contribute to Taiwan's development.

He also highlighted the council's role in promoting national tech development and spreading tech knowledge while collaborating with local governments to encourage scientific curiosity among school children nationwide.

Aside from urban areas, the train will also reach some remote regions.

The journey will start from Taipei Station, passing through the Western Main Line, Linbian Station in Pingtung County, the Eastern Main Line, and the Hualien and Taitung regions, with Keelung as its final stop.

About 240 elementary students are expected to participate in this event.

This year, the science train is set to conduct over 330 experiments across eight fields, including zero carbon emissions, green sustainability, cyber security, artificial intelligence, precision health, space tech, semiconductors, and quantum and basic sciences.
