President Tsai sends condolences after Maui disaster

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Presidential spokesperson Lin Yu-chan relayed on Friday (Aug. 11) President Tsai Ing-wen's sincere concerns and condolences to those affected by the Maui disaster.

President Tsai also expressed Taiwan's readiness to assist the U.S. in managing this disaster. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan will be in charge of communicating with their U.S. counterparts.

A devastating wildfire on Maui Island, Hawaii has claimed at least 53 lives and triggered the evacuation of over ten thousand people. The famous tourist town of Lahaina has suffered tremendous damage due to the blaze. Initial estimates indicate that the disaster has impacted thousands of people.

Tsai reportedly instructed Taiwanese diplomatic missions to stay informed about the situation of local Taiwanese compatriots and nationals and to ensure their safety. In this crisis, Taiwan vows to stand in solidarity with its strongest democratic ally.
