TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) highlighted on Monday (Jan. 20) the concerning statistics presented on the Ministry of the Interior's (內政部) fraud dashboard, revealing that Taiwan experiences an average of 500 to 600 fraud cases daily, totaling approximately 182,500 annually.
Lai noted that with only 2,430 cases solved last year, the resolution rate stands at just over 1%, leaving over 90% of cases unresolved. He emphasized the need for significant improvement in combating fraud while attending the National Police Agency's (警政署) first meeting of the year.
Lai expressed gratitude to the police officers for their tireless dedication to public safety before shifting focus to the pressing issue of fraud. He urged a shift in focus from merely solving fraud cases and recovering funds to reducing victimization and protecting citizens.
In related news, authorities have reported a surge in scams across Taiwan, coinciding with the upcoming Lunar New Year. The agency recorded 3,498 fraud cases from Jan. 12-18, resulting in financial losses of over NT$2.45 billion (US$0.08 billion). Fake investment scams alone accounted for a staggering NT$1.51 billion (US$0.046 billion) in losses.
