TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a cold weather advisory Thursday (Jan. 16) for 14 cities and counties, including Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Taoyuan City, as temperatures dropped below 10 degrees Celsius due to a continental cold air mass. Shiding District (石碇區) in New Taipei City registered the lowest temperature at 7.8 degrees Celsius, highlighting the cold air's impact.
The administration predicts the cold air mass will continue affecting northern, northeastern, and eastern Taiwan on Friday, with chilly conditions in other areas during mornings and evenings. On Saturday, the cold air mass will weaken, allowing temperatures to rise, yet radiative cooling will keep conditions cold, with significant day-night temperature differences in western regions.
Sunday will see increased moisture, bringing scattered showers to windward areas, including the northern coast of Keelung and northern mountain regions. By Monday, only eastern regions will experience isolated showers, while other areas will enjoy more stable weather.
The administration issued a "yellow (cold)" alert for areas like Keelung City, Hsinchu County, and Taichung City, indicating a chance of temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. An "orange (very cold)" alert applies to New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, and Miaoli County, where temperatures may persist around or below 10 degrees Celsius.
Residents should prepare for cold conditions and monitor updates from the CWA as the weather evolves in the coming days.
