TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will experience a brief respite from the cold on Tuesday (Jan. 14) before a new cold front arrives, according to meteorological forecasts. The TyTech Taiwan (台灣颱風論壇｜天氣特急) predicted that the current cold air mass and radiative cooling will temporarily ease. However, another cold air mass is expected to affect the region starting Wednesday, bringing rain and colder temperatures.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) advised residents to prepare for the upcoming cold snap, which could bring snow to northern and central mountains over 3,000 meters. The CWA also warned of potential icy roads, urging caution for drivers. With temperatures expected to drop significantly, the agency emphasized the importance of staying warm and ensuring proper ventilation when using gas heaters and electrical appliances.
As the cold front persists through Thursday to early Friday, temperatures will remain low, with highs of 16-18 degrees Celsius in northern and eastern Taiwan and 20-22 degrees Celsius in central and southern regions. The CWA reminded the public of the flu season, urging hygiene practices and rest for those feeling unwell. Farmers and aquaculture operators should also take precautions against cold damage.
The Ministry of the Interior's National Fire Agency (內政部消防署) reported 492 cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) nationwide from New Year's Day to last Saturday. The CWA highlighted the need to prevent cold-related respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. They advised against prolonged exposure to cold and emphasized keeping children and vulnerable populations warm.
