TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold front swept across northern Taiwan on Thursday (Dec. 26), signaling a drop in temperatures and a chilly weekend ahead. Weather experts announced that a strong continental cold air mass will arrive, marking the season's first significant cold spell. Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) added that this cold air will bring temperatures down to around 6 degrees Celsius in some lowland areas, potentially setting a record for the lowest temperature this winter.
Wu advised the public to heed cold weather alerts issued by the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). He specifically urged the elderly and individuals with cardiovascular conditions to take necessary precautions to stay warm and healthy. Wu emphasized the importance of monitoring these updates as the cold air mass approaches.
The latest European model simulations predict slightly stronger northeasterly winds around New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The western half of Taiwan will remain clear and stable, while the eastern side of Greater Taipei will see more clouds. Wu assured that New Year's Eve celebrations will proceed unaffected, although the eastern regions may experience brief, localized showers.
Wu noted a slight temperature rise around New Year's, but mornings and evenings will remain cold. He advised those participating in outdoor activities to dress warmly. Starting Jan. 2, another cold air mass will approach Taiwan. Wu mentioned that international models have significantly downgraded their intensity, but variability in their strength and duration necessitates continuous monitoring.
As Taiwan braces for this cold spell, residents should prepare for a potentially record-breaking drop in temperatures. With New Year's celebrations on the horizon, staying informed and prepared will ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
