TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Environment's (MOENV, 環境部) Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (空氣品質監測網) reported on Friday (Jan. 10) that a strong continental cold air mass has led to unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups in Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Kinmen. The ministry attributed this to pollution accumulation due to northeastern winds placing central and southern Taiwan downwind.

The ministry noted that stronger winds from Changhua to the coastal regions of Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan could cause surface dust, affecting air quality and visibility. They forecast good air quality in Hsinchu, Miaoli, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung, while northern, central, and outlying islands like Matsu and Penghu will experience moderate levels.

The ministry also predicted that Kaohsiung and Pingtung would continue to experience unhealthy air quality levels for sensitive groups over the weekend. Residents in affected areas should take necessary precautions, especially those with respiratory conditions. This development highlights Taiwan's ongoing challenges in managing air quality and emphasizes the importance of monitoring and responsive measures.
