TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) has extended the application deadline for its vehicle replacement subsidy program to Dec. 31, 2026. This initiative, originally set on Jan. 11, 2023, encourages owners of vehicles older than 10 years to switch to electric or low-pollution alternatives. The MOENV stated that vehicle owners can apply for subsidies or sell emission reduction benefits through the "Vehicle Replacement Matching Platform" (車輛汰舊換新抵換媒合平台), according to related report on Monday (Dec. 30).
The MOENV aims to enhance economic incentives for retiring old vehicles and facilitate the matching system for air pollution emission reductions. New electric vehicle buyers can assign the emission reduction benefits to the ministry for subsidies or sell them to environmental impact assessment developers for compensation. This revision also introduces new collaborative methods for buyers and sellers in the matching process.
The ministry has reported that over 70,000 old vehicles have been retired since the program's inception. Four environmental impact assessment developers, including the National Science and Technology Council Hsinchu Science Park Bureau (國家科學及技術委員會新竹科學園區管理局), Tainan City Government (台南市政府), the Ministry of Economic Affairs (經濟部), and Taiwan International Ports Corp. (台灣港務股份有限公司), have expressed interest in purchasing emission reduction benefits. The revised subsidy program aims to guide vehicle owners with ongoing needs toward choosing electric vehicles.
