TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologists have warned of a significant cold front descending on Taiwan this weekend, promising a chilly start as temperatures could drop to 10-12 degrees Celsius in open areas from Tainan (台南) to Yilan (宜蘭) early Saturday (Dec. 20).
The Weather Risk (天氣風險) Facebook page reported that a continental cold air mass from Mongolia will further intensify the northeast monsoon. City temperatures will hover between 14-16°C, with similar conditions expected in Kaohsiung-Pingtung (高屏) and Hualien-Taitung (花東) regions.
Starting Saturday afternoon, temperatures will gradually fall, reaching their lowest on Sunday. The cold air will persist until Monday morning, with urban areas seeing lows between 12-14°C. Residents should remain vigilant for possible sleet or snow in mountainous areas if temperatures drop further.
Weather Risk highlighted the increased chance of rain along the windward side of the northeast monsoon, particularly from Keelung (基隆) to Hualien (花蓮). These areas will experience overcast conditions with occasional showers. Meanwhile, central to southern Taiwan will enjoy relatively stable weather, though cloud cover will be prevalent.
Additionally, Weather Risk noted potential rain across Taiwan due to tropical disturbances from the South China Sea. While rainfall is expected to be minimal, the increased moisture could lead to rare precipitation in central and southern regions.
