TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) urged China to abandon coercive tactics and instead engage in legitimate international exchanges on Friday (Dec. 6). He emphasized that such an approach would earn China international recognition.

Lai's remarks came amid reports of China's economic maneuvers to sway Palau's diplomatic stance. He noted that China's economic strategies target not only Palau but countries worldwide, achieving mixed results depending on each country's resolve.

He praised Palau as a courageous nation with steadfast beliefs in democracy, freedom, and human rights. He highlighted the shared Austronesian heritage and values between Taiwan and Palau, calling them like-minded partners.

During his visit, Lai described Taiwan and Palau as democratic strongholds against authoritarian expansion. He expressed confidence in the strengthening of Taiwan-Palau relations despite Chinese pressure.

His visit to Palau, part of a broader tour that began on Nov. 30, included stops in the Marshall Islands and Tuvalu, with transits through Hawaii and Guam. He is set to return to Taiwan this evening after meeting with the accompanying media.
