TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Tuesday (Oct. 8) challenged China's stance on Taiwan's National Day, asking, "When has China ever been happy about the Republic of China's Double Ten National Day?" He urged China to acknowledge the Republic of China's existence, emphasizing the importance of international media accurately portraying Taiwan's and its people's efforts for peace and prosperity during the celebrations.

President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) sparked international debate after introducing the "motherland" concept at the National Day banquet on Saturday, asserting that the People's Republic of China could not be the motherland for the people of the Republic of China.

Reuters reported that China might respond to Lai's speech by conducting military drills around Taiwan, aiming to pressure the island. Meanwhile, Cho also addressed the speculation surrounding an incident at the National Day banquet involving Lai and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), clarifying that Lai's gesture was friendly and should not be misinterpreted.

Chiang responded yesterday, stating, "I don't mind either way," and emphasized the importance of cooperation between central and local governments for the nation's progress. As Taiwan navigates these diplomatic tensions, the world watches closely for China's next move. Observers anticipate potential military exercises, which could escalate regional tensions further.
