TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) reasserted on Tuesday (Oct. 1) that the Republic of China (ROC), Taiwan is a sovereign nation, separate from the People's Republic of China (PRC). This statement came in response to Chinese President Xi Jinping's remarks at a reception for the 75th anniversary of the founding of the PRC a day earlier.
President Xi reiterated China's stance on the "One China Principle" and the "1992 Consensus," claiming that Taiwan is a "sacred Chinese territory" and opposing "Taiwan independence separatist activities." He emphasized the blood ties between people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
In the press briefing, MOFA spokesperson Jeff Liu (劉永健) reaffirmed Taiwan's sovereignty, stating that Taiwan has never been part of the PRC, and the PRC has never governed Taiwan for a single day. This is a widely recognized fact and reality in the international community, he added.
Liu called for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, securing Taiwan's rightful international space, and ensuring its participation in global organizations, further expressing hope that Taiwanese athletes would no longer face disruptions while competing in the Olympics.
Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) Minister Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) echoed these sentiments in an interview. Chiu emphasized that mainstream public opinion in Taiwan opposes the "One China Principle" and the "1992 Consensus" because they do not allow for the ROC's existence.
