TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said on Tuesday (Oct. 8) that the Czech government remains steadfast in its commitment to democracy, freedom, and human rights, despite pressure from China.
Lin's remarks highlight the strengthening ties between Taiwan and the Czech Republic as former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) prepares for an upcoming visit to Prague.
Tsai will travel to the Czech capital on Oct. 12 to attend the 28th Forum 2000, where she is scheduled to deliver a speech. The visit, organized at the invitation of the Forum 2000 Foundation, will span eight days across Europe. Lin noted that Tsai's office will provide further details about her itinerary.
Lin emphasized the European countries' high regard for the democratic and prosperous developments during Tsai's eight-year presidency. He stressed that the government will fully support her journey to ensure its success. This visit underscores Taiwan's ongoing efforts to bolster its international presence and foster diplomatic relations.
In a related development, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has voiced support for Taiwan's self-defense capabilities. Lin expressed gratitude for the bipartisan support from the United States concerning Taiwan's security. He also referenced the "Taiwan Relations Act" (台灣關係法), which mandates U.S. assistance in Taiwan's self-defense.
