GUAM (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) made history on Thursday (Dec. 5) by becoming the first Taiwanese political figure to visit Governor Lourdes Leon Guerrero at her residence. This visit marks a significant step in fostering relations between Taiwan and Guam.
In his remarks, President Lai emphasized the strong familial and ideological ties between the two regions, highlighting their shared struggle against authoritarianism. "Only by uniting and cooperating can like-minded countries and regions safeguard democracy, peace, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific," he stated.
Lai further underscored the importance of collaboration, noting that "Guam and Taiwan, situated on the first island chain of the Indo-Pacific, should stand closer together to contribute to regional peace and stability."
As a gesture of goodwill, Lai presented Guerrero with Taiwanese orchids and a painting of a Taiwanese water buffalo. In return, Guerrero gifted him a local glass painting and a gubernatorial commemorative coin, symbols of their enduring friendship.
Lai's visit will conclude with a luncheon at his hotel, which is expected to be attended by over 300 overseas Taiwanese. The event will feature notable guests, including Guerrero and her husband, Guam Legislature Speaker Therese Terlaje, American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Managing Director Ingrid Larson, and several senators from Guam.
