TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Keelung Mayor George Hsieh (謝國樑) announced on Monday (Oct. 7) new standards for disaster relief and compensation to aid affected residents after Typhoon Krathon struck Taiwan on Oct. 3, causing landslides and flooding in the city.
The Keelung City Government lowered the application criteria for the city's disaster relief fund, allowing households with less than 50 centimeters of flooding to apply for NT$5,000 in aid. For the first time, the city opened applications for compensation for "flooded vehicles."
Under the "Keelung City Vehicle Damage Implementation Plan" (基隆市災毀損車輛實施計畫), flooded cars can receive up to NT$20,000, while motorcycles are eligible for NT$2,000. Vehicle owners affected by landslides can receive up to NT$30,000 for cars and NT$5,000 for motorcycles.
Residents whose homes suffered landslide damage impacting their livelihood can receive NT$5,000 per person, with a maximum of five people per household. Also, those whose homes have become uninhabitable and require relocation can apply for NT$20,000 per person, also limited to five people per household.
The Keelung City Government's Department of Social Affairs announced that applications for vehicle and housing compensation will be accepted until Nov. 7.
Residents can apply in person at district offices' social affairs sections with the necessary documents. Meanwhile, Xinfeng Street (新豐街) has reopened for traffic, with two-way traffic during peak hours and single-lane, two-way control during off-peak times. The mayor said he will continue monitoring progress to ensure smooth traffic flow during peak periods.
