KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) announced on Monday (Oct. 7) that major roads and school campuses are largely restored after Typhoon Krathon (山陀兒) left a trail of destruction last week.
The focus now shifts to park cleanup and addressing agricultural losses, Chen said, adding that damaged traffic signals should be fully repaired within a week.
Crews have already fixed 291 signals, with 350 more to go. Meanwhile, the Kaohsiung City Education Bureau continues to assist in clearing large trees from school campuses, ensuring safe pathways for students.
Agricultural areas such as Dashe (大社), Renwu (仁武), Yanchao (燕巢), and Dashu (大樹) suffered the most, with losses totaling NT$90 million. The city government seeks comprehensive cash aid from the Ministry of Agriculture. In Linyuan (林園), a hub for aquaculture, damage to industries like grouper and milkfish farming exceeds NT$10 million, with assessments ongoing.
Mayor Chen expressed gratitude to President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰), and central government agencies for their disaster relief efforts. He assured residents that the central government will fully support the rebuilding process.
The Kaohsiung Environmental Protection Bureau has cleared 7,200 tons of debris, and Taiwan Power Company (台電) has restored electricity to 95% of affected areas, following outages impacting over 200,000 households. As recovery progresses, city officials call for continued assistance and resilience from the community.
